RIVER SWEEP
RIVER SWEEP
The Foundation for Ohio River Education (FORE) teaches people of all ages in the Ohio River Basin to become environmental stewards through hands-on programs that get people on the water and engaged in preserving the cultural, ecological, and economic value of our rivers.
Litter is collected along the shores of the Ohio River coming from various sources including the streets of the surrounding towns, sewers, recreationists and storm water. River Sweep is a volunteer shoreline cleanup of the Ohio River. During a single day in 2013, 18,000 people volunteered and removed approximately 7,000 tons of trash and debris along more than 3,000 miles of shoreline (from Pennsylvania to Illinois) along the Ohio, Allegheny, Monongahela, Beaver and Kentucky Rivers were cleaned.
Since 1989, this event has been organized by ORSANCO and jointly sponsored by the environmental agencies in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. If River Sweep did not exist, most of the collected trash would continue along the Ohio River, one day reaching the ocean and ultimately interfere with the normal biological processes of the Ohio River.

VOLUNTEER: RIVER SWEEP 2014- Sat. June 21st |
RIVER SWEEP kNOwMORE will be featuring a story on the unbelievable River Sweep project. Our cameras will be at locations in Northern Kentucky Saturday June 21st capturing what makes this project so critical and what would happen WITHOUT. Since 1989, this award-winning cleanup for the Ohio River and its tributaries brings thousands of volunteers to the riverbanks to collect tons of trash and debris. River Sweep encompasses the entire length of the river, from its origin in Pittsburgh, PA to its end in Cairo, IL, including nearly 3,000 miles of shoreline and its many tributaries. More than 18,000 volunteers from public organizations, civic groups, recreational clubs, and the general public in six states bordering the river come together to collect more than 7,000 tons of trash and other debris from the banks of the Ohio River and tributaries. River Sweep is an event organized by the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, an interstate water pollution agency for the Ohio River Valley, along with environmental protection and natural resource agencies from Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania.
