RiverSweep-logoThe Foundation for Ohio River Education (FORE) teaches people of all ages in the Ohio River Basin to become environmental stewards through hands-on programs that get people on the water and engaged in preserving the cultural, ecological, and economic value of our rivers.

Litter is collected along the shores of the Ohio River coming from various sources including the streets of the surrounding towns, sewers, recreationists and storm water. River Sweep is a volunteer shoreline cleanup of the Ohio River. During a single day in 2013, 18,000 people volunteered and removed approximately 7,000 tons of trash and debris along more than 3,000 miles of shoreline (from Pennsylvania to Illinois) along the Ohio, Allegheny, Monongahela, Beaver and Kentucky Rivers were cleaned.

Since 1989, this event has been organized by ORSANCO and jointly sponsored by the environmental agencies in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. If River Sweep did not exist, most of the collected trash would continue along the Ohio River, one day reaching the ocean and ultimately interfere with the normal biological processes of the Ohio River.
