Can you name 3 nonprofits working with music? The new series on nonprofits and music premiers on Monday, March 2nd at 9 am on KETKY. Our eleventh episode, “What Would Life Be Like Without Music?” features Give Into the Groove, a community event highlighting interactive art and music to help support local charities. Other “musical” charities featured are March Madness Marching Band and Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra’s Music Works. Central Kentucky Youth Orchestra’s Music Works brings musical education to some young inner-city students, for an artistic after school alternative. savs fundraiser videoSav’s Grill has been a Lexington favorite since it opened its doors in 2008. Owner, Mamadou “Sav” Savané, grew up in Guinea, West Africa and eventually moved to Lexington with his wife, bringing the good food with him!

Unfortunately on June 3rd 2014, Sav was pulling a large pot of peanut chicken stew from the stove when it slipped from his hands, the boiling stew spilling all over him. The second-degree burns over half his body sent him straight to the intensive-care unit at the University of Kentucky’s Chandler Hospital.Fortunately for their business, Sav had just weeks before, given up the secrets to his recipes to his son and taught him how to cook them. If it weren’t for that, the business would have been closed.Sav was so loved in the community that everyone offered to help. The love didn’t stop there… Lexingtonians, people from around Kentucky, and even in different countries stepped up and supported Sav by raising over $50,000 in only 36 hours. With the Feast of Love Campaign at a total of $67,437, the Musical Feast of Love 4 Sav- ferabe edition raised another chunk of change bringing the grand total to close to $80,000 according to their Facebook page. Sav has since returned to work and recovered, but is forever grateful.

A story like this shows how much communities can show support and help those in need, just like nonprofits do. WATCH!

MUSIC WORKS- Lexington, Kentucky

Music Works

Mission, History of Organization:

Music Works PicFounded by the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras in July 2013, North Limestone MusicWorks fosters positive youth development by providing equitable access to intense, high-quality music education for Lexington’s Northside district. All MusicWorks students attend Arlington Elementary School, a Title 1 school where 95% of students participate in the free or reduced lunch program. MusicWorks is an El Sistema – inspired initiative operating daily after school for 35 second, third and fourth graders who receive free instrument use and instruction from conservatory-trained active musicians.

Problem being addressed:

Two significant challenges facing the NoLi neighborhood are student retention and academic development. Arlington Elementary has named student retention as the chief obstacle for MusicWorks to overcome. The faculty seek to cultivate lasting relationships with students and their families, thus making the program and anchor of the community and ultimately creating an incentive to remain in the neighborhood. mw-5

The NoLi MusicWorks’ primary goal is to use music education as a tool to teach positive social values and to make each child feel that they are an asset within their community. By nurturing interpersonal development skills in an orchestral setting, MusicWorks seeks to inspire its students to achieve more in their personal and academic pursuits, alongside their musical endeavors. The goal of MusicWorks is not to produce professional musicians but rather to use the skills cultivated in an immersion-style orchestral setting to develop healthy, contributing citizens.

MARCH MADNESS MARCHING BAND- Lexington, Kentucky

March Madness Marching Band

Mission, History of Organization:

march madness marching bandMMMB is an all-volunteer, community-building organization that brings joyous creative arts to charity events and public festivals. Our mixture of professional artists, dedicated amateurs and spirited children has entertained crowds throughout the state, and annually at a nonprofit street band festival in Austin, TX. MMMB welcomes performers of all ages and skill levels to attend weekly rehearsals.

Formed to represent Local First Lexington (LFL) in Lexington’s 2008 downtown Christmas Parade, MMMB has earned a wealth of parade awards, community pride, ear-to-ear grins, and statewide praise. In 2012, MMMB also earned federal tax exempt status, under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Problem being addressed:

A symphony of mismatched musical instruments, a kaleidoscope of inspired costumes, a choreographed gaggle of hoop dancers, an array of unconventional dancers and spinners. Each band member brings a piece of authentic Lexington, and together we create a delicious concoction from quirky ingredients. MMMB embodies a moving metaphor for the diverse talents of our Central Kentucky neighbors. Also? We’re really, really good.

MMMB provides unique arts access to both performers and audiences. We enliven events that are open to the public, and deliberately blur the line between art and audience. We encourage spectators of all ages and skill levels to join our open practices and our public performances.Band Member

At weekly rehearsals, professional arts educators provide no-cost instruction to band members. We also provide both musicians and dancers with tools for at-home practice. Most members of MMMB do not have other outlets for creative expression, or other ways to support the charities for which we perform.

Kentucky Nonprofit Events This Fall- Learn & Grow

NIGHT FULL OF FUN; H’ARTFUL OF FUN!

The Living Arts and Science Center is an organization that is truly committed to their mission. People and organizations who donate know that every dollar is going towards the cause; from educating young students to adults about the arts and sciences.

Without the center there would be a huge void in the arts and science curriculum; with so many cuts in public, and even private school budgets, teachers do not have funds for after school programs, or extra materials and supplies for the hands on activities students need to excel. Without the LASC there would be a big hole in our community, where a center is needed for the public so they can come interact with the arts and sciences, and learn in a fun and creative non-traditional school format. The Center really brings life to the community, because it is a place that brings everyone together while encouraging learning and creativity in fun & unique ways.

So, can you name 5 nonprofits working with art?
