2016 EMMY NOMINATIONS kNOwMORE NONPROFITS

Founded by the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras in July 2013, North Limestone MusicWorks fosters positive youth development by providing equitable access to intense, high-quality music education for Lexington’s Northside district. All MusicWorks students attend Arlington Elementary School, a Title 1 school where 95% of students participate in the free or reduced lunch program. MusicWorks is an El Sistema – inspired initiative operating daily after school for 35 second, third and fourth graders who receive free instrument use and instruction from conservatory-trained active musicians..

diss qr tagTwo significant challenges facing the NoLi neighborhood are student retention and academic development. Arlington Elementary has named student retention as the chief obstacle for MusicWorks to overcome. The faculty seek to cultivate lasting relationships with students and their families, thus making the program and anchor of the community and ultimately creating an incentive to remain in the neighborhood.

The NoLi MusicWorks’ primary goal is to use music education as a tool to teach positive social values and to make each child feel that they are an asset within their community. By nurturing interpersonal development skills in an orchestral setting, MusicWorks seeks to inspire its students to achieve more in their personal and academic pursuits, alongside their musical endeavors. The goal of MusicWorks is not to produce professional musicians but rather to use the skills cultivated in an immersion-style orchestral setting to develop healthy, contributing citizens.

Kentucky Festivals Fundraising Fun

HAPPY THANKSGIVING KENTUCKY!

For our 13th episode, “Festivals and Fundraising,” we visited three unique Kentucky festivals: Winchester’s Beer Cheese Festival, Lexington’s Woodland Arts Fair, and Fort Harrod’s Beef Festival. Our camera crew also visited the Moontower Music Festival, the backdrop for this exciting new episode.

The 10th annual Fort Harrods Beef Festival was hosted this year at the Mercer County Fairgrounds in Harrodsburg, Kentucky. The festival showcases Kentucky’s beef industry, which is the largest east of the Mississippi and eighth largest overall.
As with the Beef Festival, Winchester’s Beer Cheese Festival is a great place for local vendors to display and sell their arts and crafts. Unsurprisingly, our favorite part about the festival was that we got to sample beer cheese all day long—and then vote on our favorite one!
Episode 13 concludes with a visit to an event that hosts 200 artists, live music, and food and fun for the whole family: the 40th annual Woodland Arts Fair. Event sponsor the Lexington Art League envisions a world where art, artists, and art-making are central to human inspiration, self-realization, and meaning—and this vision certainly shone through during our enjoyable visit there.

kNOwMORE FUN: Meet Sunflower Kids

Our kNOwMORE FUN cameras visited the Crank & Boom Ice Cream Lounge in July for the 2015 Lexington Calendar Project. The Calendar Project is designed to bring together local young professionals, nonprofits, and businesses for networking in the area. The idea of each Calendar Project event is to shed light on different nonprofits in Kentucky.

This July they featured the nonprofit organization, Sunflower Kids.

Sunflower Kids works, “To promote healthy family relationships through the provision of supervised visitation and monitored exchange services.” They focus on families that have experienced domestic violence or court ordered families where the parent can’t be alone with the child. All the visits take place at their offices located in Lexington and in Scott County. They serve families from all over Kentucky as well as serving families from eight different states! On average they assist about 140 families a year. The Sunflower Kids organization is trying to spread awareness about their services so that can help even more families in the future.

kNOwMORE WATER: The Licking River

April 2015

CLICK HERE to WATCH A Preview.

Our Licking River story is a special follow-up to the two-part series on Nonprofits & Water. We will take a journey on the 300+ mile long river accompanied by the words and voice of longtime Lexington Herald Leader journalist, Andy Mead. Along the way we will explore the history of the river, visit some of its unique points of interest and learn about its current environmental status. We will also learn about the non-profit organizations that help maintain and sustain it.

The Licking River was a prominent transportation passageway for norther Indian tribes and later, the first colonial settlers from North Carolina, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The river is now used used as a recreational spot for fishing, boating, and swimming.

In July of 2014, the Licking River Water Trail Alliance was established to provide navigable water trails along the river and its major feeder streams. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to enhancing the recreational areas of the river as well as promoting river safety and education
