BBBS: Big In The Bluegrass
Last month, the kNOw MORE crew visited the Grand Reserve in the heart of downtown Lexington’s Distillery District to take part in “Big in the Bluegrass.” Put on by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass, the annual event helps raise money to support the foundation’s “match program,” which matches children and young adults with volunteer members of the community. This year’s annual fund-raising event featured local Kentucky Proud food, live auctions, cocktails, and live music by Lexington blues rockers The Tee Dee Young Band.
Currently, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass supports 310 matches, with costs averaging $1,000 per match; in addition, another 170 children are on a waiting list. The funds from the night were much needed. “It’s great and necessary to come out and support with money,” board member Seth Salomon told kNOw MORE at the event, before reflecting on other ways to contribute to the nonprofit’s work: “But the best thing people can do is be a ‘Big.’ It’s a big time commitment, but it’s a great thing and rewarding for both sides.” Check out our video for more on the fun—and fund-raising—night. FACE-IT MOVEMENT: KOSAIR CHARITIES
FACE-IT MOVEMENT: KOSAIR CHARITIES
Mission, history of organization:
Kosair Charities’ mission is to protect the health and well-being of children in Kentucky and Southern Indiana by providing financial support for clinical services, research, pediatric healthcare education, and child advocacy.
Problem being addressed:
Kosair Charities along with 20 other children’s agencies launched a movement called “Face It” to help end Child Abuse in Kentucky and Southern Indiana by 2013. Child abuse has a thousand faces. The face of the parent who knows it and knows it won’t stop until they speak out. The face of the teacher who suspects it and says so. The face of the coach who knows the difference between tough love and a hurting child. The face of the pastor who chooses to be a guardian angel. The face of the neighbor who hears it and raises their voice against it.
