MUSIC WORKS- Lexington, Kentucky

Music Works

Mission, History of Organization:

Music Works PicFounded by the Central Kentucky Youth Orchestras in July 2013, North Limestone MusicWorks fosters positive youth development by providing equitable access to intense, high-quality music education for Lexington’s Northside district. All MusicWorks students attend Arlington Elementary School, a Title 1 school where 95% of students participate in the free or reduced lunch program. MusicWorks is an El Sistema – inspired initiative operating daily after school for 35 second, third and fourth graders who receive free instrument use and instruction from conservatory-trained active musicians.

Problem being addressed:

Two significant challenges facing the NoLi neighborhood are student retention and academic development. Arlington Elementary has named student retention as the chief obstacle for MusicWorks to overcome. The faculty seek to cultivate lasting relationships with students and their families, thus making the program and anchor of the community and ultimately creating an incentive to remain in the neighborhood. mw-5

The NoLi MusicWorks’ primary goal is to use music education as a tool to teach positive social values and to make each child feel that they are an asset within their community. By nurturing interpersonal development skills in an orchestral setting, MusicWorks seeks to inspire its students to achieve more in their personal and academic pursuits, alongside their musical endeavors. The goal of MusicWorks is not to produce professional musicians but rather to use the skills cultivated in an immersion-style orchestral setting to develop healthy, contributing citizens.

MARCH MADNESS MARCHING BAND- Lexington, Kentucky

March Madness Marching Band

Mission, History of Organization:

march madness marching bandMMMB is an all-volunteer, community-building organization that brings joyous creative arts to charity events and public festivals. Our mixture of professional artists, dedicated amateurs and spirited children has entertained crowds throughout the state, and annually at a nonprofit street band festival in Austin, TX. MMMB welcomes performers of all ages and skill levels to attend weekly rehearsals.

Formed to represent Local First Lexington (LFL) in Lexington’s 2008 downtown Christmas Parade, MMMB has earned a wealth of parade awards, community pride, ear-to-ear grins, and statewide praise. In 2012, MMMB also earned federal tax exempt status, under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Problem being addressed:

A symphony of mismatched musical instruments, a kaleidoscope of inspired costumes, a choreographed gaggle of hoop dancers, an array of unconventional dancers and spinners. Each band member brings a piece of authentic Lexington, and together we create a delicious concoction from quirky ingredients. MMMB embodies a moving metaphor for the diverse talents of our Central Kentucky neighbors. Also? We’re really, really good.

MMMB provides unique arts access to both performers and audiences. We enliven events that are open to the public, and deliberately blur the line between art and audience. We encourage spectators of all ages and skill levels to join our open practices and our public performances.Band Member

At weekly rehearsals, professional arts educators provide no-cost instruction to band members. We also provide both musicians and dancers with tools for at-home practice. Most members of MMMB do not have other outlets for creative expression, or other ways to support the charities for which we perform.

RIVER SWEEP

RIVER
SWEEP

RiverSweep-logoThe Foundation for Ohio River Education (FORE) teaches people of all ages in the Ohio River Basin to become environmental stewards through hands-on programs that get people on the water and engaged in preserving the cultural, ecological, and economic value of our rivers.

Litter is collected along the shores of the Ohio River coming from various sources including the streets of the surrounding towns, sewers, recreationists and storm water. River Sweep is a volunteer shoreline cleanup of the Ohio River. During a single day in 2013, 18,000 people volunteered and removed approximately 7,000 tons of trash and debris along more than 3,000 miles of shoreline (from Pennsylvania to Illinois) along the Ohio, Allegheny, Monongahela, Beaver and Kentucky Rivers were cleaned.

Since 1989, this event has been organized by ORSANCO and jointly sponsored by the environmental agencies in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, and Illinois. If River Sweep did not exist, most of the collected trash would continue along the Ohio River, one day reaching the ocean and ultimately interfere with the normal biological processes of the Ohio River.

RIVER DISCOVERY CENTER

RIVER DISCOVERY CENTER

Hidden Highways

The River Discovery Center is a private, non-profit, educational institution whose primary mission is to stimulate an interest in and teach the public about the importance of America’s rivers to the development of the nation, and in particular upon the Four Rivers Region.

For twenty years, a group of people from Paducah realized and filled a need for a river/maritime museum. The River Discovery Center has used a variety of exhibits, including some interactive, to highlight and educate people on the importance of Paducah’s rich river history as well as the river industry.

Simulator 1

It is critical that the next generation of our community be educated on the importance of our rivers. While providing a water source for our region, our rivers also play a vital role in our environment and economy; after all, Paducah’s existence gives thanks to it’s geographical location on a river. Before the River Discovery Center opened, there was no place for our children to become “connected” to our rivers. Here, they have a place for fun learning about all aspects of our rivers.

To help persons recently diagnosed with cancer and their loved ones navigate the path through diagnosis, treatment and recovery by pairing them with a trained survivor of a similar experience so they can face cancer with someone who’s been there.

Established in 1988, Friend for Life is a network of survivors and co-survivors (caregivers) who serve as trained volunteers, providing one-on-one emotional and psycho-social support to persons recently diagnosed with cancer, and their loved ones. Facing cancer with someone who has been through a similar experience helps restore a sense of stability during a tumultuous time and to navigate the path through diagnosis, treatment and recovery. 32076_403381077169_2021273_n

Who we are
Friend for Life is a non-profit support network of cancer survivors who serve the emotional and psychological needs of persons recently diagnosed with cancer, and their loved ones. These services are offered free of charge.

How we can help
We match persons recently diagnosed with any form of cancer as closely as possible with a trained volunteer who has encountered the same type of cancer and similar course of treatment.

Wherever possible, we also match for age and gender. Our volunteers do not advise or participate in medical decisions, but offer compassionate insights into their own experiences of coping with cancer. We can help you sort through the overwhelming feelings that often accompany a cancer diagnosis. Support is also available for family and friends.
