The new two-part series on nonprofits working with water premieres November 10th at 5pm on KETKY. Our ninth episode, “What Would It Be Like Without Water”, Part One, will feature segments on Bluegrass Greensource’s Conservation programs; and we’ll also be visiting clean-up efforts along the Ohio River in Rabbit Hash, KY organized by ORSANCO and their annual River Sweep program.

Our tenth episode, “What Would It Be Like Without Water”, Part Two, will feature segments on Paducah’s River Discovery Center where we’ll learn about commerce, travel, tourism and the history of the four rivers of Western Kentucky. Our second story will look at the Kentucky River Keeper, where we’ll learn about new river trails and recreational uses for our water systems, including dams along the Kentucky River.

Both episodes, hosted by Brian Simmons, will outline what it would be like without these critical educational and protective initiatives and how our communities can get involved.

Kentucky Nonprofit Events This Fall- Learn & Grow

NIGHT FULL OF FUN; H’ARTFUL OF FUN!

The Living Arts and Science Center is an organization that is truly committed to their mission. People and organizations who donate know that every dollar is going towards the cause; from educating young students to adults about the arts and sciences.

Without the center there would be a huge void in the arts and science curriculum; with so many cuts in public, and even private school budgets, teachers do not have funds for after school programs, or extra materials and supplies for the hands on activities students need to excel. Without the LASC there would be a big hole in our community, where a center is needed for the public so they can come interact with the arts and sciences, and learn in a fun and creative non-traditional school format. The Center really brings life to the community, because it is a place that brings everyone together while encouraging learning and creativity in fun & unique ways.

BBBS: Big In The Bluegrass

Last month, the kNOw MORE crew visited the Grand Reserve in the heart of downtown Lexington’s Distillery District to take part in “Big in the Bluegrass.” Put on by Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass, the annual event helps raise money to support the foundation’s “match program,” which matches children and young adults with volunteer members of the community. This year’s annual fund-raising event featured local Kentucky Proud food, live auctions, cocktails, and live music by Lexington blues rockers The Tee Dee Young Band.

Currently, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Bluegrass supports 310 matches, with costs averaging $1,000 per match; in addition, another 170 children are on a waiting list. The funds from the night were much needed. “It’s great and necessary to come out and support with money,” board member Seth Salomon told kNOw MORE at the event, before reflecting on other ways to contribute to the nonprofit’s work: “But the best thing people can do is be a ‘Big.’ It’s a big time commitment, but it’s a great thing and rewarding for both sides.” Check out our video for more on the fun—and fund-raising—night. Learn More About BIG IN THE BLUEGRASS.
