2015 KY PHILANTHROPY SUMMIT kNOwMORE FUN

kNOwMORE FUN: Meet Sunflower Kids

Our kNOwMORE FUN cameras visited the Crank & Boom Ice Cream Lounge in July for the 2015 Lexington Calendar Project. The Calendar Project is designed to bring together local young professionals, nonprofits, and businesses for networking in the area. The idea of each Calendar Project event is to shed light on different nonprofits in Kentucky.
This July they featured the nonprofit organization, Sunflower Kids.

Sunflower Kids works, “To promote healthy family relationships through the provision of supervised visitation and monitored exchange services.” They focus on families that have experienced domestic violence or court ordered families where the parent can’t be alone with the child. All the visits take place at their offices located in Lexington and in Scott County. They serve families from all over Kentucky as well as serving families from eight different states! On average they assist about 140 families a year. The Sunflower Kids organization is trying to spread awareness about their services so that can help even more families in the future.

kNOwMORE WATER: The Licking River

April 2015

CLICK HERE to WATCH A Preview.

Our Licking River story is a special follow-up to the two-part series on Nonprofits & Water. We will take a journey on the 300+ mile long river accompanied by the words and voice of longtime Lexington Herald Leader journalist, Andy Mead. Along the way we will explore the history of the river, visit some of its unique points of interest and learn about its current environmental status. We will also learn about the non-profit organizations that help maintain and sustain it.

The Licking River was a prominent transportation passageway for norther Indian tribes and later, the first colonial settlers from North Carolina, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. The river is now used used as a recreational spot for fishing, boating, and swimming.

In July of 2014, the Licking River Water Trail Alliance was established to provide navigable water trails along the river and its major feeder streams. This nonprofit organization is dedicated to enhancing the recreational areas of the river as well as promoting river safety and education

Twitter lists are very helpful because they let you organize your feed. Instead of scrolling through your whole feed, the list is customized by your preferences to only show you the tweets of users you want to see. You are also able to choose whether to make your list public or private. A public list allows other users to subscribe to it. A private list does not notify users that they are on your list and your followers cannot see it. This is a very helpful marketing tool for nonprofits because you are able to keep up to date with other organizations on Twitter without them knowing you are checking up with them.

kNOwMORE FUN- Lexington Calendar Project

On May 20th, kNOwMORE Nonprofits had an amazing time at the Lexington Calendar Project, where local nonprofits and business leaders networked to find innovative ways to collaborate in the future. “Everybody in Lexington knows everybody else by one connection, so we just connect the dots,” explained Shawn Burns, the coordinator of this project. savs fundraiser videoSav’s Grill has been a Lexington favorite since it opened its doors in 2008. Owner, Mamadou “Sav” Savané, grew up in Guinea, West Africa and eventually moved to Lexington with his wife, bringing the good food with him!

Unfortunately on June 3rd 2014, Sav was pulling a large pot of peanut chicken stew from the stove when it slipped from his hands, the boiling stew spilling all over him. The second-degree burns over half his body sent him straight to the intensive-care unit at the University of Kentucky’s Chandler Hospital.Fortunately for their business, Sav had just weeks before, given up the secrets to his recipes to his son and taught him how to cook them. If it weren’t for that, the business would have been closed.Sav was so loved in the community that everyone offered to help. The love didn’t stop there… Lexingtonians, people from around Kentucky, and even in different countries stepped up and supported Sav by raising over $50,000 in only 36 hours. With the Feast of Love Campaign at a total of $67,437, the Musical Feast of Love 4 Sav- ferabe edition raised another chunk of change bringing the grand total to close to $80,000 according to their Facebook page. Sav has since returned to work and recovered, but is forever grateful.

A story like this shows how much communities can show support and help those in need, just like nonprofits do. WATCH!

We’ve had a blessed year and been able to help eleven nonprofits tell their stories. I’d like to give a special nod to the crew that have helped make this possible: Sam McGhee, producer; Nick Williams, production assistant & camera; Wyatt, Nia, Robert- interns; Haley Wolberton, production coordinator; Danny Meyer, scripting & social media; and Brian Simmons our host.

We’ve got great things planned for 2015 and if you’d like to see a nonprofit or community cause featured in one of our shows…NOMINATE THEM! If you’d like to sponsor or partner with us for a truly great state-wide cause, CONTACT US.

Until then HAPPY NEW YEAR and get ready for A BIG ANNOUNCEMENT in 2015.
